Halle Berry Joins Roland Emmerich’s ‘Moonfall’ by Marco Shepherd

Halle Berry has signed on as the female lead for  Moonfall, the Roland Emmerich-helmed sci-fi epic, which was acquired by Lionsgate late last year. The pic follows a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact, and against all odds, a ragtag team launches an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love and risking everything to land on the lunar surface and save our planet from annihilation.

Berry is joining Josh Gad, who was previously announced as part of the cast. The Oscar-winning actress will play a NASA astronaut-turned-administrator whose previous space mission holds a clue about an impending catastrophe.

Emmerich, Harald Kloser, and Spenser Cohen co-write the screenplay which Emmerich is producing under his Centropolis Entertainment banner with Kloser producing through his company, Street Entertainment. Executive producers are Dennis Wang, James Wang, J.P. Pettinato, Marco Shepherd, Ute Emmerich, Carsten Lorenz, and Stuart Ford.

Production is slated to begin this fall in Montreal.

Roland Emmerich’s big-budget epic Midway is ready to hit the high seas with Aaron EckhartKeean JohnsonTadanobu AsanoDennis Quaid and Nick Jonas among those joining the project.

Luke Evans, Woody Harrelson, Mandy Moore, Ed Skrein, and Patrick Wilson have already been revealed for the strong ensemble and they are now joined by Asano (Zatoichi), Eckhart (The Dark Knight), Johnson (Alita: Battle Angel), singer and actor Jonas (Jumanji: Welcome To The Jungle), Quaid (Day After Tomorrow), Luke Kleintank (Man in the High Castle), Jun Kunimura (Kill Bill: Vol. 1), and Etsushi Toyokawa (Love Letter).

Based on the true story of the Battle of Midway, a turning point in the Pacific theater of World War II, the $100M+ action-drama will chronicle the exploits of the soldiers and pilots at the heart of the conflict. Shoot is due to get under way from September 5 in Honolulu.

Lionsgate Acquires U.S. Rights To Roland Emmerich-Directed WWII Pic ‘Midway’ by Marco Shepherd

Lionsgate made a splashy acquisition at the Toronto Film Festival, landing U.S. distribution rights to Midway, the Roland Emmerich-directed drama about the seminal WWII battle that is a co-production between The Mark Gordon Company and Emmerich’s Centropolis Entertainment. Bona Film Group leads the financing, and Starlight Culture Entertainment Group is in talks to provided the rest. Emmerich and Harald Kloser are producing with Gordon. MGC’s Matt Jackson is also producing.

Roland Emmerich named honourary chairman of GABA FI by Marco Shepherd

Roland Emmerich has been named honourary chairman of GABA FI, the German American Business Association Film Initiative.

The Initiative (GABA FI) was initiated in 2015 as a joint effort by the German American Business Association and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Los Angeles.

Based in Hollywood, it supports and promotes German filmmakers, actors, composers, screenwriters, producers and other industry professionals in Los Angeles.

GABA FI hosts regular meetings, networking and educational events, discussion forums and screenings to honour German talent, and provides a platform to connect, interact and improve the career of members.

Emmerich, whose credits include Independence Day, Stargate, 10,000BC and White House Down, will help the group in the year ahead as it plans to expand its educational programme and presence at trade shows such as AFM and the AFCI Location Show, and further connect members with each other and American industry professionals.

GABA FI is supported by the Consulate General of Germany, the German Film Commissions and companies such as Centropolis Entertainment, Pixomondo, International Film Partners and White Bear PR.

EXCLUSIVE: As the Roland Emmerich-directed sci-fi sequel Independence Day: Resurgence kicks off the first weekend of summer box office in North America today,Universal Pictures has closed a deal for the filmmaker’s next epic-sized sci-fi picture. The studio spent seven figures to acquire Moonfall, a spec script that Emmerich wrote with his 2012 collaborator Harald Kloser and Spencer Cohen, latter of whom scripted the sci-fi pic Extinction for Good Universe and Mandeville. Emmerich will direct the film and produce it with Kloser. The picture will be fast-tracked.

The studio has been in the mix on the script along with Sony Pictures and Fox, both of which have made successful big-canvas films with Emmerich. This one is best described as Emmerich’s 2012 mashed together with Close Encounters Of The Third Kind, following an unlikely band of misfits who must unite to save humanity when the moon falls out of orbit and hurtles towards earth.

This is the seventh collaboration between Emmerich and Kloser, with the others being 2004’s The Day After Tomorrow, 2008’s10,000 BC, 2009’s 2012, 2011’sAnonymous, 2013’s White House Down andIndependence Day: Resurgence.
